Going into this game Rovers had already made more progress in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy than they had in any season since reaching the final of the competition in 2007, and this 6–3 victory in the Southern Section quarter-final meant that The Pirates took another step closer to a Wembley final.

Wycombe had a couple of links to Rovers at the club at the time of this match–they were managed by former Bristol Rovers player Gary Waddock, goalscorer Scott Rendell would go on to spend a month on loan at Rovers in 2011, and although not named in the squad for this game, they also counted Andy Sandell amongst their playing staff.
