Steve Book is the former goalkeeping coach and backup 'keeper at Bristol Rovers. He spent five years coaching at The Pirates, before being replaced by Len Bond in the summer of 2010.

Steve was appointed as the goalkeeping coach of the Pirates in October 2005 in order to allow Phil Kite to concentrate full-time on his duties as physio, prior to this Phil had been combining the two roles. While coaching at Rovers, Steve was also playing for Mangotsfield United in the Southern League.

Career[]

Steve began as a non-league player, representing Paulton Rovers, Welton Rovers, Frome Town, Weston-super-Mare and Bath City before moving to his first league club, Brighton & Hove Albion. He failed to make an impact at Brighton, and was sent out on loan to Slough Town, before re-joining Frome Town. In 1998 Steve joined his second Football League team, Lincoln City, but as with Brighton he failed to make it onto the pitch for a first-team game and moved to Forest Green Rovers in September of the same year. After three years at the Lawn, Cheltenham Town paid £8,000 for his services. While at Cheltenham, Steve won promotion to the Football League in 2002, enabling him to finally make his Football League debut at the age of 33.

In 2004 Steve joined Swindon Town for a season, making two league appearances, before moving to Cirencester Town. In October 2005 he joined the coaching staff at Bristol Rovers, and signed as a non-contract player as goalkeeping cover. He played just one game for Rovers, a 2-1 defeat against Notts County at the Memorial Ground on 11 March 2006. At the end of the season he joined Mangotsfield United as a player, but continued his coaching role at Rovers, and returned to the Gas as emergency cover for Steve Phillips after backup Mike Green broke a finger in a reserve match in 2007.

At the start of the 2008-09 season, Steve joined Tiverton Town as cover for injured first-choice 'keeper Ray Johnston, who like Steve has played one game in goal for the Rovers first team. Johnston's continuing problems caused him to be released by the club, leaving Steve as the first choice keeper at Ladysmead. He was joined in the Tiverton squad by on loan Rovers forwards Matt Groves and James Fraser that season.

In 2010, after being released as Bristol Rovers' goalkeeping coach, he was appointed in the same capacity by Cheltenham Town. He also decided to retire from playing at this point.
