On 14 February 2009 Rovers played their 28th League One game of the 2008-09 season, an away fixture against Scunthorpe United. This was the Pirates' first game in February after the previous two matches were called off due to snow and a frozen pitch, their last game a 1–0 defeat at Southend United fourteen days earlier.
First team coach Paul Trollope named a starting eleven with two changes from the previous game, with Chris Lines preferred to Craig Disley in the centre of midfield, and top goalscorer Rickie Lambert sidelined by a hip injury and replaced with Darryl Duffy. On the bench Disley took Lines's seat and Sean Rigg and Charlie Clough took the places of Duffy and Ben Hunt. Clough was making his first appearance in a Rovers matchday squad this season, having previously been sent out on loan to Mangotsfield United.
Rovers took control of the game in the first half, thanks to goals from Duffy and Kuffour in the 21st and 31st minutes respectively. From that point on the Pirates put in a solid performance and never looked like failing to win. The only blip coming when Craig Hinton was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area in the 54th minute, but Scunthorpe striker Paul Hayes hit a weak shot straight at Steve Phillips from the resulting penalty kick, providing him with one of the easier penalty saves of his career.
