Goalkeeper Sam Walker joined Rovers on a 5-month loan deal from Chelsea at the beginning of the 2012–13 season. He was brought in as a stand-in for injured keeper Scott Bevan, who was recovering from surgery, as manager Mark McGhee felt that reserve goalie Conor Gough was not yet experienced enough to take on the role of first team regular.
Due to the high number of goals conceded in the early part of the season, Sam found himself benched and Neil Etheridge was brought in on loan from Fulham to replace him. When Etheridge's loan expired Walker was back in the starting lineup, but was again dropped for the final game of his loan spell when experienced 'keeper Steve Mildenhall joined on loan from Millwall.
He returned to his parent club having played eleven times in League Two and once each in the FA Cup, League Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Career[]
After initially being part of the Millwall youth setup, he joined Chelsea in 2007, signing his first professional contract three years later.
After playing regularly for Chelsea's reserves, he made his debut in senior football while on loan at Barnet at the tail end of the 2010–11 season, eventually going on to play seven times for them. The following campaign saw him loaned out twice more, to Northampton Town for the first half of the season, where he made 21 league appearances, then to Yeovil Town, where he played a further 20 games.
He signed for Rovers in the summer of 2012.
