Rob Holmes is a goalkeeper who joined Rovers in October 2009, when he joined from Kidderminster Harriers as an 18 year old. While with the Kidderminster youth team he won a league and cups treble during the 2008–09 season, and Rovers saw enough promise in Holmes to award him his first professional contract, which lasted until the end of the 2009-10 season. He was released on expiry of that deal however, without having made any first team appearances.

Rob's only call up to the first team squad came on 6 November 2009 in an FA Cup first round defeat to Southampton. Regular keeper Mikkel Andersen, who was on loan from Reading, did not receive permission from his parent club to become cup-tied, moving Rhys Evans into the starting eleven and freeing up a spot on the bench for Holmes.

Prior to joining Rovers, Rob was a youth team player with Kidderminster Harriers. He was snapped up by Rovers before joining the Harriers' first team however, but was then released by The Pirates without having played a match.

Following his release he joined Ilfracombe Town, a club where his father, Ian Holmes, was a former player. He started the season as the reserve 'keeper, having to wait until 20 November to finally make his debut in senior football, and making a handful of first team appearances during the 2010–11 season. The following season he was a regular in their reserves, playing 30 times for them in the North Devon Football League and a further eleven times in cup games, but failed to make a single first team appearance.
