Rovers faced Oxford United on August 10th 2010 in the first round of the Carling Cup. It was the first time the two sides had met since 2006 and Oxford's first League Cup tie since 2005. This game marked the first Rovers appearance for young goalkeeper Mike Green as Mikkel Andersen had been away on international duty with Denmark U21s. Former Rovers' goalkeeper Ryan Clarke was between the sticks for Oxford.
The game would prove to be one to forget for the gas, as they were humiliated by a team that, just a few months earlier, had been playing Conference football. It was the first time since 1992 that Rovers had conceded six goals (a 6-1 defeat to Cambridge United) and Rovers' worst defeat in a competitive fixture since a 6-0 defeat to Walsall in 1986.
