French striker Oumare Tounkara, who is of Guinean descent, joined Bristol Rovers in late February 2013 as a free agent. He was able to sign for the club outside the normal January transfer window due to him having left Parisian side Red Star earlier in the season.
He made his debut for The Pirates two days after signing, when he came on as a 59th-minute substitute for Ryan Brunt in Rovers' 3–0 victory over Burton Albion on 2 March. His only goals for the club came in a single game, also his first start in a Rovers shirt, when he netted twice in a 4–2 win against Dagenham & Redbridge on 1 April 2013.
He was released at the end of the 2012–13 season on expiry of his short-team deal having played nine times.
Career[]
Oumare's first senior club was Sedan, a team based in the north-east of France, where he signed professional terms in 2008. After a year with no first team football under his belt he moved to England to join Sunderland.
His first year at Sunderland saw him again fail to make any senior appearances, and in the summer of 2010 he was sent out on a season-long loan to Oldham Athletic. He went straight into The Latics' starting lineup, and held down a place in their squad throughout the entire campaign, failing to appear in just two League One matches that season.
His return to Sunderland saw him back on the sidelines however, and it wasn't until the end of the 2011–12 season that he played again when Oldham took him on loan for a second time for an eight-match spell. Predictably, given that he had not made a single first team appearance for The Black Cats, he was released when his contract expired in the summer of 2012. He returned to his home city of Paris, where he joined Red Star, but his stay was brief and he left a club for the third time in his career without having played a first team match for them. After a spell without a team he was picked up by Rovers manager John Ward at the end of February 2013.
Following the decision by the Rovers boss not to renew his contract in the summer of 2013 he was picked up by Stevenage
