Gambian winger Mustapha Carayol was signed by manager Paul Buckle for an undisclosed fee in his effort to build a competitive squad for the 2011–12 season. The pair had previously worked together at Torquay United and Buckle was keen to re-acquire his services.

He became the first Gambian-born player to join Rovers when he signed in 2011, although he has spent virtually his whole life in England.

After rejecting a number of bids for his services from other clubs, Rovers eventually agreed a transfer fee with Middlesbrough in the summer of 2012, a year into his two-year contract. The details of the transfer were not released to the public, but the fee was believed to have been in the region of £500,000.

Career[]

After playing for a local youth team in London, his footballing career got properly under way when he joined the youth setup of Swindon Town. When Paul Ince left Swindon to become manager of Macclesfield Town in 2006 he took Carayol along with him, and he signed him again a year later when he took over the reigns at Milton Keynes Dons, awarding Mustapha his first professional contract. After a loan spell with Crawley Town during the 2007–08 season he signed for Torquay United in 2008, who in turn loaned him to Kettering Town in 2009.

He rejected Torquay's offer of a new contract in 2010, opting instead to join Lincoln City, who paid an initial fee of £35,000 for his services, but was reunited with former Torquay manager Buckle at Rovers in 2011.

Shortly after signing for Middlesbrough in 2012 he was forced to spend four and a half months on the sidelines after hyperextending his knee, but after returning to the side in February 2013 he featured regularly in the first team lineup.
