Matthew Somner, known as Matt, is a defender who spent less than a fortnight as a Rovers player in 2005. He was signed on a non-contract basis by Ian Atkins at the start of the 2005-06 season, along with Michael Husbands, and made just one appearance for the club before leaving to join Aldershot Town just 13 days later.

His sole game for Rovers was a 2-1 defeat by Grimsby Town at the Memorial Stadium on 9 August 2005. He played the full 90 minutes, and although he was offered a contract by Atkins he decided to join the Shots instead.

Although from Middlesex, Matt played for Wales at under-21 level.

Career[]

Matt started out at Brentford, where he made his debut in a 6-0 defeat at Swansea City on 1 May 2001. In all he made 84 league appearances for the Bees, and also had a loan spell at Cambridge United. Cambridge signed him for the remainder of the season in February 2005 and he went on to play a total of 24 league games for them before leaving in the summer.

After his brief stint as a non-contract player with Rovers he joined Aldershot Town for the remainder of the 2005-06 season, playing in 31 games in the Conference. He made his return to league football with Notts County for two seasons starting in 2006. He was released by the Magpies after playing 54 league games, and dropped back down to the Conference National in 2008 when he joined Mansfield Town. He was a fairly regular member of the first team for his first two seasons with them, but fell out of favour in his third year, being loaned out to Altrincham before being released and joining Forest Green Rovers at the end of the January 2011 transfer window.

He was picked up by Lewes in the summer of 2011, where he played under assistant manager and ex-Gas man Justin Skinner.
