Matt Groves is a striker who came through the Rovers' youth system at the Bristol Academy of Sport. He was one of seven players promoted to the first team squad in the 2007 off-season, along with Charlie Clough, Tom Godsell, Alex Kite, Adam Mahdi, Ryan Paddock and Charlie Reece, and like Mahdi was released shortly before the end of the 2008-09 season.

Career[]

His debut for the first team came in an FA Cup second round match against Rushden & Diamonds, when he came on as a 77th minute substitute for Andy Williams on 1 December 2007. His league debut came away to Huddersfield Town two weeks later, on 15 December, when he replaced Lewis Haldane in the 76th minute of the match.

In order to gain some more first-team experience, Matt joined Chippenham Town on loan in March 2008 until the end of the 2007-08 season. He was again sent out on loan at the start of the 2008-09 season, this time to Tiverton Town. His first goal for Tiverton came in an 8-0 victory over Elmore in the Mills Hospital Cup. He impressed enough at Ladysmead for them to extend his initial one month loan to a second month, and he returned to Bristol in October 2008.

On 11 December 2008 he joined Mangotsfield United for an initial one-month period, which was later extended to the maximum of three months. On his return to Rovers he was informed that his services were no longer required and he left the club, signing for Weston-super-Mare shortly afterwards. His short-term deal at Weston took him up until the end of the season, when he signed for Weymouth, following a successful trial with the south coast club. During the 2009–10 season the Terras suffered financial difficulties, and faced with taking a 50% pay cut Matt opted to leave the south coast club in March 2010, joining Yate Town for the final few weeks of the season. He joined Yate's local rivals Magotsfield United in the summer of 2010, opting to remain with them even when offered a contract by Paulton Rovers in January 2011.

After beginning the 2011–12 season with Mangotsfield, he was picked up by his former club Yate Town in October 2011.
