Rovers were eliminated from the 2011–12 League Cup at the second round stage, thanks to a last-gasp winner for Leyton Orient, scored by Stephen Dawson.

After beating Championship side Watford in the first round The Pirates traveled to London to face League One's Leyton Orient, with the carrot of a trip to Premier League Blackburn Rovers in the third round for the winner. The Os, who included Jamie Cureton amongst their starting eleven, took a two goal lead in the first half through Dave Mooney and Ben Chorley, but Chris Zebroski halved their lead mid-way through the second half. Rovers looked as though they had done enough to force the game into extra time when Eliot Richards equalised 16 seconds into added time at the end of the 90, but Dawson was Orient's hero in the 94th minute when he scored their decisive third goal.
