2004–2007[]

Rovers played in League Two from its inception in 2004, when the three divisions of The Football League were rebranded from Divisions One, Two and Three to the Championship and Leagues One and Two. Their stay in the new division was brief, winning promotion to League One via the playoffs at the end of the 2006–07 season after two mid-table finishes in the previous two campaigns.

2011–present[]

Rovers began their second spell in League Two after being relegated from League One in 2011. They struggled in the first season back, and midway through the campaign relegation looked a distinct possibility, but a change in manager from Paul Buckle to Mark McGhee saw results improve and the team end the year in a comfortable mid-table spot.

The 2012–13 season was almost a carbon copy of the previous campaign, this time Mark McGhee bringing the club to the brink of relegation and John Ward playing the role of saviour. The team even finished with an almost identical record to the previous year, with just one more win and one fewer goal conceded differentiating the two seasons.
