Jim Paterson is a defender and winger who joined Rovers on a short-term deal as a free agent at the end of January 2012, having been without a club since leaving Shamrock Rovers at the end of the 2011 season.

He became a regular fixture on the left side of the pitch after joining Rovers, working well with both Lee Brown and Gary Sawyer, both also left-sided midfielders and defenders, which offered plenty of flexibility in matches for the manager. He was rewarded for his performances with a one-year deal late in May 2012, which was later automatically extended to a second year when he made enough appearances to trigger a clause in his contract.

Career[]

Jim began his professional career with Dundee United in 1996, but it would be a further two years before he made his debut in the Scottish Premier League, when he played the full 90 minutes in a game against Dunfermline Athletic on 23 September 1998.

In all, Jim made 101 SPL appearances for Dundee United, despite twice breaking his leg while playing for them, before signing for Motherwell in 2004. He moved to England for the first time in January 2008, having made 108 league appearances for The Steelmen, when he joined Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed fee. After being loaned out to Aberdeen at the beginning of February 2010 until the end of the 2010–11 season, he suffered another season-ending injury on 20 March in an SPL match against his former club Dundee United.

During the 2010 summer break he had fallen out of favour at Plymouth and was told he could leave if he was able to find another club. After negotiations with Greek side Kavala broke down he returned to Plymouth, and was able to force his way back into their first team, making 28 league appearances during the the 2010–11 season, bringing his total league appearances for them up to 65 games. He was released in 2011, and after being unable to find another club in England he signed for Irish side Shamrock Rovers for the remainder of the 2011 season.

His spell in Ireland was a successful one, picking up a League of Ireland champion's medal and playing in the group stages of the Europa League during his brief stint. While with The Hoops he played alongside former Rovers loanee Gary Twigg, but he left at the end of the year, and was again without a club until joining Rovers at the end of January 2012.
