James Hunt is a midfielder who spent three years at Rovers from 2004 until 2007. He was brought to Rovers on a free transfer by manager Ian Atkins, who had previously managed him at both Northampton Town and Oxford United.

James was club captain at Rovers until a disagreement arose with new manager Paul Trollope over a decision to relegate him to the bench from the starting 11 for a league game against Mansfield Town late in 2006. The tension between the two escalated, resulting in James being transfer listed,[1] and he never played for the club again.

Career[]

James started his footballing career at Notts County before linking up with long-time manager Ian Atkins for the first time in 1997, when Atkins took him to Northampton Town. Hunt spent five years at Northampton, making 172 league appearances and scoring eight goals. In 2002 Atkins again signed Hunt, this time for Oxford United where he spent two years and played in 80 league fixtures, finding the back of the net on three occasions.

Ian Atkins signed James for the third time in 2004, shortly after being appointed as Bristol Rovers manager. James played for Rovers for two and a half years before the move turned sour, and he spent a further six months as a Rovers player, although he did not play for the club during that time. In January 2007 James joined Grimsby Town on loan until the end of the season, and after making a name for himself at the club signed for them permanently at the end of the 2006-07 season. He remained at Grimsby for a further two years, until being released in the summer of 2009, when he dropped out of the league to join Gainsborough Trinity. He retired from football in 2010.
