Gary Sawyer is a defender who joined Rovers on a free transfer in the summer of 2010 after his contract with Plymouth Argyle expired. He rejected a number of offers from other clubs to join The Pirates, and after taking part in the club's pre-season campaign he made his competitive debut in the opening game of the 2010–11 season, a 3–0 defeat at the hands of Peterborough United in League One.
He remained a first team regular throughout his two-year stint with The Pirates, although he missed a large chunk of the 2011–12 season through injury. Despite being offered a deal to remain with Rovers, he opted instead to move to Leyton Orient on the expiry of his contract.

Gary is a product of the Plymouth Argyle youth system, and he graduated through to the professional ranks in 2002, although it would be a further four years until he made his debut in The Football League. He spent his early years at the club out on loan, firstly a brief spell with Weymouth, before spending two seasons with Exeter City between 2004 and 2006.
He went on to play 95 times in the League for The Pilgrims, before being loaned out to Bristol City towards the end of the 2009–10 season. At the time he stated that he was an admirer of the club, and hoped to earn a permanent move there, but after making just two appearances he returned to his parent club. He had already rejected a new contract with Plymouth before his loan move, so he was picked up by Bristol Rovers on a free transfer in the 2010 off-season.
