Gary Powell was a youth team player who was promoted to the first team squad during the 2000-01 season. He did not make any first team appearances during that season, and was released in the summer of 2001. Until 2009 he was the only Rovers player to have been given a squad number higher than 40, having been awarded the number 43 shirt. Rhys Evans was given the number 51 shirt early in the 2009-10 season.

Playing career[]

Gary came through the Rovers youth system, but lasted only a single season with the first team before being released without playing a single game. From Rovers he joined Bath City where he was initially the first choice at left wing-back, but he was displaced from that role later in the season by former Watford and Newcastle United man Jason Drysdale. At the end of the 2001-02 season he left Bath to join Paulton Rovers, where he stayed until the end of the year before joining Yate Town in December 2002. He went on to play for Hallen for two seasons from 2005, before joining Frome Town in the summer of 2007. He left Frome in 2008 after a single season and became a player-coach at Chipping Sodbury Town for a year, before returning to Hallen in the same capacity the next season.

At the start of the 2010–11 season he joined Odd Down, again as player-coach, but a lack of first team opportunities combined with the effort and expense of travelling from his South Wales home led him to leave the club in February 2011 and sign for Bitton. After the conclusion of the 2010–11 season, having finished as runners-up in the Western League Premier Division, he left Bitton to take up his first managerial job at Tytherington Rocks, and although he remained registered as a player he made it clear that he considered himself primarily a manager.
