The League One match against Crewe Alexandra on 17 March 2009 was Rovers 36th league game of the 2008-09 season, and their 39th in all competitions. It was the third consecutive away game for the Pirates, who had won the previous two matches 3–0 and 5–0, meaning confidence was high. Crewe were also on a good run of form coming into the game, and the match saw two good teams cancel each other out, ending in a 1–1 draw.
Rovers named an unchanged lineup from the previous match, a 5–0 thrashing of Walsall, and included loanee goalkeeper Danzelle St Louis-Hamilton on the bench, after his loan spell was extended to a second month.
During the game Dennis Lawrence gave Crewe a 70th-minute lead, but this was cancelled out after less than four minutes thanks to a Darryl Duffy equaliser. Crewe thought that they had taken the lead for a second time late in the game, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. The contest ended with Rovers dominating the action, but they were unable to find a winning goal, and were forced to settle for a single point. Although in the light of the previous two results this could be seen as a disappointment, it kept alive their impressive run of only two defeats in the last fourteen games.
