After a largely uneventful first half, Rovers went goal crazy after the break to record their biggest win of the 2011–12 season, and also inflict Burton Albion's heaviest defeat of the same campaign.

Mustapha Carayol opened the scoring just before half time, before Eliot Richards doubled The Pirates' advantage just seconds after the restart. Calvin Zola struck back eight minutes later to keep The Brewers' hopes alive, but when Eliot Richards was brought down in the area on the hour mark and Matt Harrold converted the resulting spot kick Rovers' two-goal advantage was restored. At this point the floodgates opened and Jim Paterson, Matt Harrold and Eliot Richards all scored within the next 15 minutes, before Richards completed his first career hat-trick on the 81 minute mark to round off the day.
