On 23 August 2008 Rovers took on newly promoted Hereford United. Rovers had had a slow start to the season preceding this game, having been knocked out of the Carling Cup and having scored just one point from their first two league games.
Paul Trollope named an entirely unchanged 16 for the match which included ex-Hereford striker Andy Williams on the bench. Hereford included ex-Rovers loanees Sam Oji and Richard Rose.
Rovers took the lead after just three minutes thanks to Darryl Duffy's first goal for the club. It quickly became two as Rickie Lambert before Duffy added his second and Rovers' third after just 22 minutes. Jeff Hughes got his first for the club just after Half-Time and Lambert and Chris Lines were to further add to the Rovers total before Steve Guinan scored a consolation for Hereford in the dying seconds.
