A third straight defeat for Rovers heaped more pressure on under-threat manager [[Paul Buckle. It had now been over two months since The Pirates' last league win and patience was growing short among the fans and the board. It later turned out that this would be Buckle's penultimate game as Bristol Rovers manager before being relieved of his duties in early January 2012.
The Crewe lineup included former Rovers shot stopper Steve Phillips in goal, meanwhile Rovers named Oliver Norburn on the bench for what would be his final game before returning to Leicester City on expiry of his loan deal. Lance Cronin got his first taste of competitive action as a Bristol Rovers player when he replaced Scott Bevan at half time due to injury.
It took Crewe just 68 seconds to take the lead, when AJ Leitch-Smith put the ball past Bevan. Matt Harrold grabbed an equaliser for The Gas, but an own goal by Cian Bolger and goals from Nick Powell and David Artell gave The Railwaymen a 4–1 lead at the break. After making a triple substitution at half time, Rovers reduced their deficit to two goals when Scott McGleish scored two and a half minutes into the second half, but Crewe sealed their victory with an injury time strike from Nick Powell.
