Bristol City are the main local rivals to Bristol Rovers. Traditionally support for City lies in the south of Bristol and the Rovers support to the north, although in reality there are pockets of support for both clubs all over the city.

The teams have met on 106 occasions in the Football League and national cup competitions, but have played each other many more times in the Gloucestershire Cup, Southern League, Western League and in friendly matches.

Probably the most famous meeting between the clubs for Rovers fans was on 2 May 1990, when they were lying in first and second places in the third division. The game was effectively a decider for the league championship and was screened live on local television. Rovers ran out 3–0 winners at Twerton Park and took the third division championship for 1989–90.
